Welwyn Garden City trains to London: 32 min, £3,836/yr

Three different London trains leave Welwyn Garden City and they take very different amounts of time. The fast train to King’s Cross takes 32 minutes. The Thameslink service to St Pancras takes 37 minutes and then carries on under central London. The direct train to Moorgate takes 51 to 54 minutes, which is longer than changing at Finsbury Park.

Everything below was checked against the published weekday timetable and walk-up fares on 10 August 2026 using traintimes.org.uk, which carries the National Rail timetable, plus Trainline for season ticket prices.

How long it takes

In the morning peak the fast King’s Cross trains run at 08 and 38 minutes past the hour: the 07:08 arrives 07:40, the 07:38 arrives 08:10. Off peak they settle into a half-hourly pattern at 22 and 52 past, and the run drops to 30 minutes because there is less ahead of them on the line.

The Thameslink trains are the other useful service. They call at St Pancras, Farringdon, Blackfriars and London Bridge and keep going south. On the morning we checked the live departure board, the 07:30 from Welwyn Garden City was running through to Sevenoaks. If your office is in the City or Southwark, that train saves you a change even though it is five minutes slower to central London.

The Moorgate trap

Welwyn Garden City has direct trains to Moorgate, and they are the slowest way to get there. The 07:40 direct arrives at 08:34, a 54-minute journey. The 07:38 fast train to Finsbury Park, then a two-minute platform change onto a Moorgate service, gets you in at 08:22 instead. Taking the slower-looking option with a change saves twelve minutes.

The direct Moorgate trains earn their place at the other end of the day and for the intermediate stations. They call at everything down the line, so if you are going to Hatfield, Welham Green, Brookmans Park, Potters Bar, Hadley Wood or New Barnet, that is your train.

What it costs

Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield are both inside the contactless pay as you go area, so most people never buy a ticket at the machine.

The number to notice is the Anytime Day Return at £23.10 against £23.20 for two contactless taps. They are within ten pence of each other, so buying a paper return at the machine gains you nothing unless you want the Travelcard for tube and bus travel at the other end. Off peak, contactless is clearly cheaper: £16.80 for a return day’s tapping against a £16.70 Off-Peak Day Return, again effectively level, but the tap gives you the flexibility to come home whenever you like.

Season tickets, and whether you need one

Trainline quoted these prices on 10 August 2026 for Welwyn Garden City to London Terminals.

A peak day costs £23.20 on contactless. An annual season at £3,836 therefore pays for itself at 166 commuting days a year, which is a shade under three and a half days a week across a 48-week year. Below that, tapping in is cheaper.

Five days a week brings the season down to about £16.70 a day, against £23.20 on contactless, so a full-time office commute saves around £1,500 a year. Two or three days and you should be tapping in, or pricing up a Flexi Season, rather than paying £3,836 up front.

The Travelcard version costs £1,644 a year more. That only makes sense if you also use the tube or buses most days once you arrive: at £1,644 a year it is worth roughly £7 of London travel on each of 230 commuting days.

Hatfield, four miles south

Hatfield is one stop down the line and slightly quicker into King’s Cross: the 07:41 arrives at 08:10, a 29-minute run. Peak contactless is £11.00, sixty pence less than from Welwyn Garden City.

That makes Hatfield marginally the better commute on paper. What tips it back is parking, which is covered below, and which costs considerably more at Hatfield.

Parking at the station

Both station car parks are run by APCOA and the difference between them is large.

Parking a car at Hatfield station on a weekday costs £10.10 against £7.50 at Welwyn Garden City, and Hatfield adds a 15p convenience fee to every tariff. Over a five-day week that is £13 more, which comfortably wipes out the sixty pence a day Hatfield saves you on the fare. At weekends the position reverses: Hatfield is £3.80 for the day against £5.50.

Blue Badge holders park free at Hatfield once registered. Welwyn Garden City has a 2.30m height limit at the entrance and takes payment by card, cash or the APCOA Connect app using location code 2271.
