Welwyn Garden City Christmas Lights: 21 Nov Switch-On

Welwyn Garden City’s Christmas Lights Event is on Saturday 21 November 2026, free entry, in the town centre. The Christmas Lights Trail runs from Sunday 15 November 2026 to Wednesday 6 January 2027. Both dates come from the council’s own events calendar. Times for the 21 November event have not been published yet, and Hatfield’s 2026 switch-on has not been announced at all.

Almost every other page you will find about this is out of date. This one says which ones, and why.

What is confirmed for 2026

The council lists the event as one it runs “in partnership with the Welwyn Garden City BID”, with free entry. (One Welwyn Hatfield, Christmas Lights Event) The trail is listed separately as recurring daily across those dates and described as “the business-funded light trail”. There is one oddity worth knowing. The trail is listed as starting on Sunday 15 November, six days before the event on Saturday 21 November. In 2025 the two were the same day: the event ran on Saturday 15 November and the BID’s own page said the trail “will come to life” at 6pm that evening. Nobody has explained the gap, so if you are going specifically to see the lights come on, wait for the confirmed time rather than turning up on the 15th.

What the town centre event usually involves

The 2026 line-up is not out. The council’s Christmas pages still carry the 2025 programme, which is a reasonable guide to the shape of the day. (One Welwyn Hatfield, Christmas in Welwyn Garden City) In 2025 it ran across the afternoon and evening and included:

• Story time with Santa in the Howard Centre at 1pm and 3.30pm
• Blizzard the Penguin, an 8ft interactive inflatable, 4.30pm to 5.30pm
• Live performances from the Cotter Academy of Irish Dance, Waterside Primary School, Thalian Theatre Company and DH Dance Academy
• Face painting, stilt walkers and walkabout acts
• Food and drink from Waffle Wands, Dotty’s Sweets and Banquet Inn Bars

The funfair was the part that ran over two days: Friday 14 November 4pm to 9pm and Saturday 15 November noon to 7pm, with rides from £3, cash and card. If it returns on the same pattern in 2026 it will land on the Friday and Saturday around the event, but that has not been confirmed.

The event is funded by the businesses of the town centre through the WGC BID, working with the borough council. The BID’s levy was put to a renewal ballot this autumn, with the result due on 30 October, which is what pays for the lights from April 2027 onwards. We covered that in the BID ballot story.

The light trail and where the installations are

The trail is a set of large lit installations spread across the town centre, free to walk round, with a photo competition attached to the hashtag #WGCXmasLights. The council’s 2025 page put the count at 11 installations and named the Christmas Bear, Wilfred the Christmas Dog and the Tunnel of Lights among them, with a penguin added for 2025.

The BID’s own trail page maps where they stand, although the dates on that page are still the 2024 ones, so read it for locations and not for timing. (Wonderful WGC, Christmas Lights) It puts the Christmas Bear, the Tunnel of Lights, the Ski Bear and Santa’s Chair at Stonehills Square, and the Bauble, the Christmas Trees, the hot air balloon (outside Cote) and Wilfred the Dog (outside Giggling Squid) on Howardsgate, with the carousel outside Sainsbury’s.

Hatfield: no 2026 date yet

Hatfield’s switch-on is a separate event at White Lion Square, and there is nothing for 2026 on the council’s calendar. Its forward listings run to March 2027 and contain one Christmas entry, the Welwyn Garden City one. (One Welwyn Hatfield, events)

The 2025 event, called Hatfield’s Festive Friday, ran on Friday 21 November 2025, 3pm to 7pm, with the lights switched on at 6pm by the Mayor and Santa. (One Welwyn Hatfield, Hatfield’s Festive Friday) It had a Santa’s grotto in Hatfield Library from 3pm to 5.20pm, warned that queues were expected, and ran a timed entertainment programme from 3pm. One detail that catches people out: the town centre Public Space Protection Order was lifted for the event only, 3pm to 7pm, so a drink bought from the event bar could be carried inside the bollarded area, and the order came back into force at 7pm. Hatfield’s date has landed in the second half of November in recent years and has been announced roughly a month ahead. Expect it in October. We will add it here when the council publishes it.

One Hatfield Christmas date is already fixed, and it is not the switch-on. Hatfield Town Council has Carols at the Galleria on Tuesday 1 December 2026, 5pm to 6pm in its own events calendar. (Hatfield Town Council, Carols at the Galleria) That council is the parish-level authority for Hatfield and runs its own programme separately from the borough, which is part of why the two towns’ Christmas listings never appear in one place.

The pages that will mislead you

Three of the first results you will find are stale, and none of them says so:

• wonderfulwgc.co.uk/christmas-in-welwyngardencity-town-centre is the 2025 event, dated Saturday 15 November 2025.
• wonderfulwgc.co.uk/christmas-lights is the 2024 trail, dated 16 November 2024 to 1 January 2025.
• one.welhat.gov.uk/whats/christmas and its two sub-pages are the 2025 programmes for both towns, with no year on them.

The only pages carrying 2026 dates are the two council event listings above.

Getting there

The event is in the pedestrian town centre, so the practical question is the car park. Tariffs, the free ones and the single car park in the borough that charges on a Sunday are all on our parking in Welwyn Garden City page. What it means for you

• Put Saturday 21 November in the diary, not the 15th. The trail starts on the 15th, the event is on the 21st.
• Do not book a day around the funfair yet. Its 2026 dates and hours are not out.
• Hatfield is unannounced. If you need the Hatfield date, watch the council’s events calendar through October rather than the Christmas landing pages.
• Take the time with a pinch of salt. No start or finish time has been published for 21 November. In 2025 the equivalent day ran from about 1pm to the evening.
