Work on the free 88-space car park started on 1 September and runs in two phases. It stays open, but the spaces available move as the work goes round the site.
Resurfacing of Moors Walk car park in Welwyn Garden City started on Tuesday 1 September and is provisionally due to finish by the end of October.
The car park serves the shopping parade and the doctors’ surgery at Moors Walk, in the Haldens ward on the east side of the town. It stays open while the work is done, but the number and location of usable spaces will change as the work moves round the site.
What the work covers
Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council lists six things in the scheme:
- full resurfacing of the car park, replacing a surface it says has deteriorated
- drainage repairs
- one additional disabled parking bay outside the doctors’ surgery
- a new pedestrian path through the central section of the car park
- improved landscaping
- improvements to the recycling area, including new screening
The council’s contractor Ringway is managing the site, with barriers and signage in place and site supervisors present during working hours.
What Moors Walk has now
The council’s own car park record for Moors Walk, AL7 2BQ, gives the current numbers:

On those figures the extra bay outside the surgery would take Moors Walk from 10 disabled bays to 11. The council has not published a revised total, so that is our arithmetic from its own record rather than its figure.
Nothing announced changes the charge. Moors Walk is one of roughly 20 borough car parks that are free, and the council has not said otherwise.
The gap in what has been published
The council says the work is in two phases “to reduce disruption to shops and businesses”, and that visitors should follow on-site signage. It has not published which part of the car park closes in which phase, when phase one ends, or how many of the 88 spaces are out at any point. There is no phasing plan or map on the council’s website, so the signs on the day are the only guide.
The plans follow two community consultation sessions held in March, which the council says informed the final design.
Councillor Jane Quinton, Executive Member for Environment, said: “We know the condition of the car park has been a concern for residents and local businesses, so it’s great to see work starting to create a safer, more accessible and better-quality car park for everyone who uses it.”
What it means for you
If you drive to the shops or the surgery at Moors Walk over the next eight weeks, allow for spaces being closed off without notice as the phases move. The car park stays open and stays free throughout, and it is open around the clock, so an early or late trip is likely to be easier than the middle of the day.
If you park there overnight or leave a vehicle for several days, check the on-site signage before you do. Resurfacing needs a cleared area, and the council has not published which sections are cleared when.
